Started in 2015, Young Mentors is the World Family Children Foundation’s biggest and oldest volunteer program. We offer free and flexible academic tutoring services to low-income children and families. Young Mentors has tackled the age of remote learning and work-from-home headfirst by going fully virtual.

The World Family Children Foundation is always expanding. Although Young Mentors is based in the Bay Area, we have established a dozen different chapters in locations all over the United States. If you’re interested in starting a local YM chapter in your community and becoming a branch leader, our head director will guide you through the process of setting up a formal branch, recruiting volunteers, and contacting schools. How do I sign up?
The link for parents to sign up their students can be found here. If you fill out the form properly, we will contact you as quickly as possible to help set you up with a tutor. Approval from a guardian is required.
What subjects are covered?
We have a wide range of volunteer tutors who specialize in all sorts of topic areas. Our team covers high school curricula from 1st to 12th grade in areas including English, math, science, history, foreign languages, arts, and even SAT/ACT prep and AP course/test prep. We will try our best to accommodate any special requests.
Who are the tutors?
Our tutors are high school and college age volunteers who graciously dedicate their time to helping those who can’t afford expensive academic tutoring services. All volunteers must undergo basic training and workshops lead by experienced tutors; they have access to various YM resources and teaching guides, and are almost always familiar with the content because they have taken these classes themselves.
How can I volunteer?
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer tutor for Young Mentors, the link can be found here. The process for training and being assigned students will depend on whether or not a YM branch exists in your region or school.
Is this program COVID-19 safe?
Yes! All of our tutoring services have migrated to virtual meetings to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. Tutors are trained to work with students over software platforms such as Zoom or Google Meets. Our in-person tutoring services are set to resume at some point in the near future for students who learn better face-to-face.
When are the tutoring sessions?
One-on-one tutoring sessions are scheduled specifically to be as flexible as possible. We will try to find volunteers who can match your student’s specific availabilities. After determining which days in the week both the student and tutor are available, the tutor will typically reach out to the family via email to settle on a final time. The sessions may last anywhere between 1-3 hours.
